ACT ONE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXT. WINTERFELL \u2013 DAY \u2013 PAST<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eight thousand years ago \u2013- the Long Night has ended. Winterfell is being constructed. The FIRST KEEP and WATCHTOWER stand formidable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GIANTS and CHILDREN OF THE FOREST lay stones in the partially- constructed Winterfell walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK \u2013- the Three-eyed Raven \u2013- walks past the workers unseen. He leans close to\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026BRAN THE BUILDER, the legendary founder of House Stark, who places his hand on the wall and closes his eyes. He whispers an incantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waves of glistening LIGHT radiate from Bran the Builder\u2019s hands. The light spreads over the entire wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CROAK of a raven with three eyes distracts our Bran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bran follows the black bird into the crypts. He knows, for better or for worse, he must follow his guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INT. CRYPTS \u2013 DAY \u2013 PAST<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bran raises his lantern as he walks through the dark, empty crypts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the familiar crypts seemed eerie filled with the statues of the Old Stark Kings, they have an even more bone-chilling atmosphere now without the Kings of Winter watching over Bran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bran runs his hand over the few hollow tombs. He sees something shiny in a half-open tomb. He takes a few steps closer and feels a chill that stops him in his tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Bran can glimpse the shimmering object\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026the NIGHT KING emerges out of the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bran and the Night King lock eyes. The Night King reaches out to touch Bran. Startled, Bran drops his lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crypts go BLACK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXT. WINTERFELL \u2013 GODSWOOD \u2013 DAY \u2013 PRESENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bran sits alone with his back against his favorite weirwood tree, only the whites of his eyes visible. Bran\u2019s eyes suddenly return to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bran collects himself under the weirwood\u2019s pensive expression, its leaves a brighter red than fresh blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INT. WINTERFELL \u2013<\/strong> GREAT KEEP \u2013<\/strong> DAY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Brandon Stark sits across a large map table from JON SNOW and DAENERYS TARGARYEN. All the major players have gathered around the map of Winterfell. But Bran has their attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Night King doesn\u2019t want to
destroy Winterfell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fact that he\u2019s headed this way
would suggest otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No, he wants Winterfell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SANSA STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Why would the Night King want
Winterfell?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Winterfell was protected by the
\nChildren of the Forest and Bran the Builder for a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAENERYS TARGARYEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What reason?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What does the Night King want with
\nWinterfell?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAENERYS TARGARYEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your information is not
\nparticularly impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARYA STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Could you do better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAENERYS TARGARYEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I brought armies and dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon eyes Arya, who stands down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even if Winterfell is protected
\nfrom within, we will prepare to defend it just the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon touches the map of Winterfell, where rows of BLACK STONES encircle the castle walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon pushes several stones toward a row of WHITE STONES, which surround both the black stones and the castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW (CONT\u2019D)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dothraki will use their speed
\non horseback to cut through the Army of the Dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon separates the white stones. Jon nods to JORAH MORMONT, who stands near TYRION LANNISTER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon pushes a different set of black stones toward the separated white stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW (CONT\u2019D)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Unsullied will engage the
\nwights left standing. We\u2019ll cut their numbers in half before they ever reach our walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That is an optimistic strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAENERYS TARGARYEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You disagree? We have the Dothraki,
\nthe Unsullied, and the Northern forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Army of the Dead are untrained.
\nThey\u2019re mindless. Their greatest strength is their numbers. If they swarm, they can overwhelm us. But we have just as many fighters on the side of the living as they have on the side of the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every one we lose, they gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What would you suggest we do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t win using conventional
\nmilitary strategy against an unconventional foe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SANDOR CLEGANGE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What would you know? You got your
\nface nearly cleaved in two at your last battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

True. That is why this time I plan
\nto stick to my true talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Drinking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Strategy. I will be safely inside
\nthese magically protected walls putting my very large brain to good use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARYA STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

     (unimpressed)
We\u2019ll need better weapons, for those more inclined to actual fighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAMWELL TARLY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re forging Valyrian steel
\nweapons as fast as we can. We\u2019ve already tipped the Unsullied spears with dragon glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAENERYS TARGARYEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And we have dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Which we will use \u2013- sparingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAENERYS TARGARYEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I can burn the entire Army of the
\nDead to ash in a blink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARYA STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Can you kill the undead dragon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daenerys hesitates. Tyrion watches the look that passes between Jon and Daenerys. It\u2019s not lost on Arya either. Jon turns back to the battle plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We can\u2019t lose another dragon.
     (a beat)
Bran, will the magical protections hold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As long as there is a Stark in
\nWinterfell, yes. And the more Starks, the stronger our ancestors\u2019 bonds become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TYRION LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So the Starks will also be inside
\nthe walls of Winterfell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll go wherever the fighting is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And who will protect you? You are
\nthe rightful heir to the Iron Throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SANDOR CLEGANE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone he can trust, Kingslayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bran, stone-cold with a hint of fear in eyes, looks directly at Jon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRANDON STARK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Night King and his army are
\nclose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon places a finger on a milky quartz rock \u2013- distinct, different from the rest of the stones on the table \u2013- and pushes it toward Jaime. He looks Jaime in the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JON SNOW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re in need of a Kingslayer, Ser
Jaime. Fail us, betray us, and we\u2019ll all be marching in a different army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon looks to Jaime, who nods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INT. WINTERFELL \u2013 CORRIDOR \u2013 DAY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jaime walks quickly to catch up to Brienne and Sansa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lady Brienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brienne stops walking. Sansa looks from Brienne to Jaime, then keeps walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ser Jaime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both Stark girls are safely in
\nWinterfell. Lady Catelyn would be proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brienne unbuckles her sword belt and holds it out to Jaime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER (CONT\u2019D)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What are you doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You gave me Oathkeeper for a
\npurpose. As you said, my oath has been kept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Then perhaps you will make me
\nanother oath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I am sworn to the service of the
\nStark girls. I cannot leave them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This oath you can accomplish by
\ntheir side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I should like the pages of my book
to say more than \u2018Kingslayer\u2019 once I die. If this battle bodes ill for me, I want you to hold the memory of what happened here. I should like the world to know that a Lannister tried to pay his debt to the Starks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t be sentimental. You will write your own legacy for many
\nyears more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Will the honorable Brienne of Tarth
\nrefuse to swear an honorable oath?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brienne sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I vow to hold memory of all that
\nhappens here, should any harm befall you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

     (teasing)
Was that really so difficult?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brienne smiles in spite of herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER (CONT\u2019D)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now put that sword away. It was a
\ngift. Next thing I know, you\u2019ll be trying to give back poor Podrick. Has the lad learned to sit a horse yet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brienne puts Oathkeeper back around her waist. She and Jamie resume their walk down the hallway together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRIENNE OF TARTH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Very ill. But I\u2019ve grown rather
\nfond of the boy. He may be a swordsman yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAIME LANNISTER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And I thought dragons were the most
\nastonishing thing to happen in recent memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re both smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
